The self-publishing nature of the App Store is hands down one of the best things to ever happen to indie gaming. After all, developers can exercise all the creative freedom they want without being intimidated by the upper echelon of the publishing elite. Even among this independent circle, though, there’s a handful of developers whose games you take one look at and all you can say is “What?” Enter Heads Up! Hot Dogs.
The upcoming title from Diego Garcia and Emmett Butler gives you one simple task: drop as many hotdogs as you can on the heads of random passersby. Watch out for the fuzz, though. Like a pack of modern William Tells, they’ll take any opportunity they can get to charge in and shoot your franks to pieces.
Heads Up! Hot Dogs is far from finished, but the initial reaction appears to be overwhelmingly positive. Currently, the developers are rounding out the title by adding extra content and gameplay tweaks.
“We’ve got the game in beta now having finished the basics, and people seem to be enjoying it,” wrote Garcia in a message to IGM Mobile. “So we’re moving on to adding things like unlockable content (new levels unlock when high scores are achieved on old ones), balancing the gameplay, working on new characters and places, and debugging debugging debugging.”
It’s certainly not an orthodox idea, but from what we’ve seen in the gameplay trailer, Heads Up! Hot Dogs looks like it has the potential to be one of the most addictive arcade titles on the iOS.
An official release date hasn’t been set, but Garcia says we can expect something to drop into the App Store between late September and mid-October. Until then, keep your eyes here for the latest on this quirky project.
You can also keep up with the developers on Heads Up! Hot Dogs’ official Tumblr page.
