When you first watch the trailer for Major Magnet, you might be forgiven for mistaking it for another rather similar game starring a blue, wisecracking hedgehog and his twin-tailed fox buddy with the world’s punniest name. That’s because the company behind it, PagodaWest Games, have not only been life-long fans of the Sonic the Hedgehog series, but have also worked on a fan project: ‘Sonic 2 HD’.
Following in the classic Sonic the Hedgehog style, Major Magnet is a 2D side-scrolling platformer. You take control of the titular Major Magnet (also known as Marv), and guide him through the strange and dangerous magnetic landscape utilizing Marv’s newly acquired magnetic powers to navigate the otherwise untraversable landscape.
The gameplay itself, however, is where Major Magnet sets itself apart from its competitors. Instead of using touch controls or a game pad to control Marv himself, you manipulate the environment around him, using the tools at your disposal to clear a safe path as he moves towards the goal.
If you’re a fan of the Sonic the Hedgehog series, or even of sidescrolling platformers in general, then Major Magnet is the game for you. The game itself is due out in Q1 2013, and in the mean time, you can check out the PagodaWest Games website, as well as their Twitter page.
